Dear Readers and Viewers,

The way I completed my studies for a diploma in mechanical engineering at the government polytechnic college was totally different from the usual period of four years and the procedure followed by other normal students.

In 1995, when I was starting my final eighth semester of mechanical engineering, the government of Tamil Nadu, under the rule of the then Chief Minister, Ms. J. Jayalalitha, suddenly ordered the termination of part-time engineering programs conducted by the directorate of technical education under the control of the government of Tamil Nadu since the program is self-financing.

So that all the government polytechnic colleges in Tamil Nadu closed all the engineering part-time programs without any notice to the students. In that dire circumstance, the invaluable future of thousands of part-time students in various districts of Tamil Nadu came into question.

In order to complete the remaining studies and continue the part-time courses for future students, along with the support of all students studying in the state of Tamilnadu, I started a state-level association in the name of “Tamilnadu Government Polytechnics Part-Time Welfare Association,” and I assumed the role of general secretary of the association.

After that, I went to the directorate of technical education and secretariat numerous times with the association’s office holders and requested to meet with all government officials, including the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, the minister of education, and the chief secretary for education, to resume the programs that had been halted by the government.

But our efforts were in vain; no one gave importance to our request since the teacher association called a strike with the government in order to raise their wages to conduct part-time classes, and in the meantime, we were ridiculed since we were comparably weak in every aspect. Since the time was prolonged without a solution, we approached the high court of the state for legal proceedings. But we didn’t reap the fruit.

Finally, in order to gain the attention of the government and find a solution to the problem, we conducted a massive state-level fasting program under my leadership in the capital of Tamil Nadu by assembling participants from all parts of the state.

As a result of the fasting program, we were called by the government and appreciated for conducting the program with a high degree of discipline and a true intention. The issue was solved in a week by the chief of government immediately, and all the classes have been started as usual.

I, along with every other student in the state, happily finished my studies as a result. I earned distinction after completing my mechanical engineering diploma with a 94% grade.

The crucial point is that, as soon as the part-time program was restarted, I resigned from all related positions with the Tamilnadu Government Polytechnics Part-Time Welfare Association since I believed my objective had been accomplished. Many people at all levels have expressed their appreciation for my leadership abilities and performance as a result of this episode.

I take this opportunity to remit my heartfelt thanks to the Government of Tamilnadu, all the students of the “Tamilnadu Government Polytechnics Part-Time Welfare Association,” and the office bearers of the association, especially Mr. Purushothaman and Mr. Chinna Durai, who have provided great support for the entire journey till reaching the goal.
