Work study or work analysis is a set of scientifically conducted procedures to systematically identify and collect all the actual values of each activity, from the beginning to the end of the entire process, in a practical context, for the purpose of comparing and implementing several key objectives in the future.
Work study is an important practice carried out before making any changes or revisions to the current operation of any activity, in order to achieve the three main objectives of cost reduction, quality improvement and productivity improvement.
Work study is a key practice for reducing factory process waste, reducing the rejection rate to an optimal level, automating, process synchronization, and expanding industrial and manufacturing operations.
In every industrial sector, work study plays a vital role in storing and organizing the raw materials required to manufacture goods, maintaining the manpower required for each operation, and optimizing the various fuels and powers required for production activities, in order to meet production needs.
Similarly, in every industrial and administrative sector, work study helps to select the type of design, development, technology, skills, and facilities required to complete a new product change in order to meet market conditions and satisfy customers.
Work study usually starts with a visual inspection and ends with recording the exact final values of each operation of the entire process based on the use of various resources such as man, machine, material, money, cycle time, etc. for the entire process.
This work study is conducted following two basic techniques, namely method study and work management, which are based on a sequence of procedures in a practical context and are applicable to almost any stage of every type of activity (administrative or commercial or industrial activities).
The method study generally followed through certain procedures that are: select the work to be studied, record all the facts and values related to the existing method of process, examine the recorded values exactly without any compromise, develop the best economical method in order to match with the plant requirements, install the new method as to a standard practice, maintain the new method until it is found to be outdated.
Work management is the use of techniques designed to determine the time it takes a qualified worker to perform a specific task at a defined level of performance. Time study is also known as work measurement. It is essential for both planning and controlling operations.
